Before Moving In

So you have said yes, you want the property and you have signed the contract. The chances are you will have some time remaining before you actually move-in so you may want to consider the following:

Now would be a good time to give thought to getting insurance for your personal belongings. It is also worth finding out who is currently supplying the electricity and gas and then informing them that you will be moving in (see our list of utilities for phone numbers etc). This should help to avoid any expensive bills for reconnection. If you are being very organised you could also call BT to arrange for the phone to be connected for your arrival.

You should also let your University/College know your future address. You may also want to inform other organisations e.g. loyalty card providers etc. This can be done simply and easily by using the ihavemoved.com address changer facility which will save you hours of time.

Moving In

Job 1 as soon as you walk in the door is to read your electricity and gas meters and inform the suppliers. You may also need to inform the water and sewerage companies that you are the current occupier. If you have a water meter then check that also. You will probably also need to inform BT (call 150) to get your phone connected.

Getting your inventory sorted out should be a main priority. You will normally have a week to check it and make any amendments. If you haven't been issued with one make sure you ask for one and follow up in writing. Our section on getting your deposit back has more on this topic. Once you are a bit more settled in, we would highly recommend investigating a change in utility suppliers as it could result in considerable savings. We have a separate section on actually setting up a system to help prevent your flat mates winding you up over paying the bills.

Last but not least - arrange your house warming party and don't forget to ask us!
