Renting a room in someone else’s flat is invariably the cheapest form of accommodation if you don’t have access to University accommodation or can’t face living with a family.
In Edinburgh for example you could expect to get a studio/one bed flat (which you can find in our property listings or through letting agents) for around £400 a month. Compare this to around £250 for a room in a similar location.
- Make sure you get some form of receipt for your deposit and preferably sign an agreement;
- Ask questions over the phone before agreeing to go along to a viewing so you can get a feel for who you are dealing with;
- Don’t view a flat on your own (or if you have to, at least tell someone where you have gone);
- Try to meet all the flat mates before agreeing to anything.
- Can be a great way to meet people;
- Contracts are usually flexible (letting agents renting out flats typically expect a minimum of 6 months)
